  • Fund with innovative style
  • Global fund manager

This global fund manager has had a presence in Australia for over 15 years with a meaningful office of approximately 90 people here in Sydney. Although this team is part of a global funds management business which manages over $200bn, the Australian office has a boutique feel about it where the local team here is left to its own devices but is able to draw on expertise when needed, and the local team has its own ‘ring fenced’ profit and loss out of which it pays its incentives from. The products have a long history of outperformance and are either at capacity or close to. The strategies are index aware with a value philosophy covering large caps, mid caps and microcaps. All analysts are generalists who contribute to a daily discussion which often lasts 2 hours which covers individual stocks or issues which may affect a segment of the market (eg houses going off the grid, power stations shutting down, new low cost market entrants within the telco sector).

You will ultimately report to the Head of Equities but feel like you are part of a flat structure where your ability to contribute and add value really is up to you. You will immediately be covering stocks and sectors. Those sectors/stocks will be dictated by your knowledge base and over time your allocation will rotate. The DNA of this team is to think differently to the way others do. You will be encouraged to think of innovative ways to source and interrogate data which will give you unique insights into the future of businesses you and the team analyse. Along with this, you will also produce typical bottom up research.

We are seeking candidates with between 2-5 years experience with backgrounds covering equities research, corporate finance or principal investing. We expect steps have been put in place to pursue a career in equities (e.g. potentially CFA qualified).

We are only considering candidates who are currently based in Australia and have full working rights.

  • Fundamental global equities, just using more data
  • Long/short, Emerging markets and more

This team is part of a large global fund manager with more than $400bn FUM.  The Sydney office has 80+ people across several investment strategies.  The Quantitative Equity funds team covers 3 global offices, the Sydney office having roughly 8 staff, 3 of which are research focused.  All quantitative funds cover global equities (including emerging markets) but have strategies across global long short, blended strategies, quality bias, enhanced index and others. This team calls itself a “scalable fundamental investment team” in that it uses large pools of data to: 1) stress test investment strategies and either integrate some or all of those strategies into the fund and; 2) use quantitative filters across large amounts of global stocks to identify opportunities that no typical bottom up fundamental team would find.  This team then overlays commonsense portfolio construction methods and macroeconomic knowledge (mostly which comes from consensus discussions rather than quantitative findings).

Reporting to the co-head (who is based in Sydney) your role will be to come up with and drive to completion researchable investment ideas which will be used for internal investment discussion and presentation collateral with clients.  Some of the research may be to identify stock ideas: Example topics may be finding a basket of winner/loser stocks for new trends like: Driverless cars, import/export stocks in a protectionist government future, best methods of assessing mining stocks, finding evidence of a global rotation from bond proxies to cyclicals.  Other research may be around investment strategy, for example: best methods of identifying stocks to short, finding the best and worst parts of smart beta.  Other quantitative work may also simply be to identify companies with good financials, cash flow and profitability.  The rest of the role will include investment discussions with the quantitative team, the fundamental equities team (which is a separate team) and client meetings.

We are looking for candidates with roughly 5-12 years of experience within roles which may cover global markets across various asset classes, but also experience across fundamental single stock investing.  The candidate may come from asset allocation, economics, fundamental equities analysis who is able to do light computer programming.  There must be an ability for this candidate to do their own research, likely having built tools in SQL or Matlab or a similar analytical tool.
