Heading into a new year and a new round of hiring activity, Adam Taylor-Campbell reflects on investment banking Analysts today:

Back in my day … ha – those words immediately conjure up the Four Yorkshireman sketch by Monty Python (https://youtu.be/ue7wM0QC5LE). But seriously, it does sometimes appear that previous generations had a harder time; longer hours, tougher working environments, cultural insensitivities, dictatorship styled bosses and to add insult to injury, they got paid less than today’s cohort. However, the question still stands: were previous generations ‘technically’ stronger?

This is a question that has cropped up a number of times over the course of the last year from our buy-side clients – the quality of case studies and financial modelling tests completed by prospective candidates appear to be falling short of the mark. Has COVID and its associated restrictions (the lockdowns, the work from home orders etc) impacted the way Analysts have been able to develop and learn versus the previous generations? Keen to hear your thoughts … it will be an interesting read one evening over a glass of Chateau de Chasselas.
