About the Opportunity
Senior Commercial Analyst, Energy Markets

Our client is an Australian energy storage business with a vision to deliver firm, on-demand and carbon-free electricity when Australians need it most. They are focused on industry-leading technology that is available today. The firm has significant experience across the energy sector in design, construction, commercial operations and financing, and investment in projects. The team has strong relationships, delivering well over $4bn of capital projects.

Our client is looking for a Senior Commercial Analyst to join their investment team based in Sydney. The Senior Commercial Analyst reports to the CFO and will be responsible for leading the commercial and financial modelling and business intelligence analysis to support key decisions relating to new and existing opportunities. Working closely with the commercial team, which includes a junior commercial analyst, your key responsibilities will include:

• Developing & managing market supply, demand & pricing analysis in respect of Australian energy markets

• Developing & managing forecasting models in Excel to provide insight on market trends

• Developing & managing financial models in Excel to evaluate the feasibility & profitability of potential projects

• Taking an active role in scoping external service providers in connection with market studies

• Prepare detailed financial forecasts, including revenue, cost, & cash flow projections

• Researching & analysing target markets & contributing to presentations

• Involvement in business case development, acquisition due diligence & post-acquisition integration

• Ensuring active & ongoing consideration of rapidly changing environment/market

• Delivery/presentation of timely & consistent analytical output to management

• Support the establishment of consistent standards & practices for modelling, reporting & data analysis

• Developing broader analytical & business intelligence tools including statistical & machine learning approaches & data visualisation

• Management & mentoring of junior analytical resources

The successful candidate will fit the following criteria:

• ~4 - 6 years’ experience in energy market forecasting or analysis, either with big 4 accounting firm, a consulting firm with a recognised energy market practice or a corporate which is a NEM market participant

• Solid understanding of key dynamics & drivers in energy markets & the range of participants in those markets

• Advanced modelling & data analysis skills to support evaluation of complex projects & opportunities

• Strong written & verbal communication & strong analytical skills

• Knowledge of project/economic financial evaluation metrics, project finance & cashflow waterfall modelling

• Knowledge of the East Coast energy market, including working knowledge of the NEM market rules & regulation or energy market trading operations

• Experience with databases, coding & business intelligence tools (such as PowerBi) as well as a solid foundation in statistical/machine learning concepts would be an advantage
